Physical Activity
- Lunchtime Leagues – we run various lunchtime leagues during the summer months. Teams are made up of boys and girls from different classes and matches are played during lunchtime. These sports vary from soccer to basketball to rounders and much more.
- ‘Do your Talking as You’re Walking’ – we have introduced this into our playground to encourage pupils who, even if they just want to chat, they can do so while walking to make sure they are keeping active during break time.
- Playground Leaders – pupils 6th class can sign up to become a Playground Leader. They give up one lunch break per week to play games with the Junior Classes, ensuring they are active and happy throughout break time.
- Active School Walkway – We use the pitch or around the school building as a walkway. One lap of the pitch is 500m, meaning that for every 2 laps you do, you have completed a kilometre. One lap of the school is 200m, meaning that for every 5 laps you do, you have completed a kilometre. We have also added the signage from Active Flag to create a more comprehensive and educational walkway where teachers can use it for various teaching opportunities. Our Active Committee came together to create a map of our school and decide where to put the signs around the school for us all to enjoy! The weather held us back for a while but take a look below to see some snaps of our walkway!
- Active Breaks – All classes take part in active breaks throughout the school day. This includes Go-Noodle, Bizzy Breaks and a variety of classroom movement ideas. On a wet day, if pupils cannot go outside at break time, extra time will be given to movement breaks in the classroom. We are participating in the Active Break Challenge from the 23rd of February and can't wait!
- Wake up, Shake up! - This is an initiative where our Active School Committee model and guide the entire school through some exercises in the morning before school. This takes place every Monday, Wednesday & Friday morning. When the weather is fine we complete our exercises outside, however, we do live in Ireland so when it rains our Active School Committee visit the classrooms and we complete our exercises and stretches inside.
- Active Homework - As a school we believe that active homework is just as important as written and academic homework. Therefore, this year we are pledging to give active homework on the last week of every month. We encourage all of the family to get involved with their children and make exercising fun for all.
- Run around Ireland Challenge – this year we will be trying out the Run around Ireland challenge. Each class chooses various Irish landmarks to ‘run’ to e.g. Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge is 405km away from our school. We use either the pitch during the summer months or around the school building as our walkway. 1 lap of our pitch is 1km and 5 laps of our school is 1km. We collect a lollipop stick or cubes every time we complete a lap to keep track!
- Themed Fitness Challenges – Throughout the year we engage in fun challenging activities at Halloween, Christmas, Easter etc. For example at Christmas time we do the 12 days of Fit-mas, Santa Dash, Christmas relays and so much more!
